07. Adding file attachments

You can attach PDF files, Excel spreadsheets, Word documents and simple text documents to your references. You can basically do this in three different ways:

  1. If you already have the files on your computer you can add from inside of you EndNote library, or by dragging and dropping the files from the desktop
  2. You may also use the EndNote feature Find Full Text
  3. Save and open it from the PDF file itself

Attaching files saved on your computer

  • Save the PDF file of an article on your desktop or some other destination which you prefer. In EndNote, mark the record to which you want to attach the PDF file (or any other file). From the References menu, first choose File Attachments and then Attach File. The file will be added to the reference that you have marked.

You can also right click on the reference that you have marked in your library and choose the option Attach file

  • You can also drag and drop a file that you have saved on your computer onto the designated reference:

  • In the reference list in your library you should now see a paper clip icon in front of the reference:

Find full text

Find Full Text is a feature in EndNote that allows you to automatically attach PDF files to your references if there are any available.

  • Start by blue marking all the references to which you want to attach full text files, either among All References or specific Groups. Then, click on the Find Full Text icon above the reference list or right click on the references to initiate the search for full texts:

  • In the reference list in your library you should now see a paper clip icon in front of the reference:

Save and open a PDF in EndNote from the PDF file itself

This will only work if you already have the designated reference in your EndNote library and that reference has a doi number. A doi (digital object identifier) number is a unique number assigned to an article.

  • Open the PDF and save it and click OK and open it in EndNote and it will be attached to the right reference by matching the correct doi number:

  • In the reference list in your library you should now see a paper clip icon in front of the reference:

Where PDF files are stored

The PDF files are stored in a specific data folder associated with your EndNote library. If your EndNote library is called My EndNote library.enl the associated data folder will be called the same but with a different file extension: My EndNote library.Data:
