APA – Citing Sources

Religious works

  • Religious works are usually treated as having no author.
  • In the author field, the name of the work is written instead.
  • It is often unknown what year the work was published - use the year given in the version you are using.
  • If an updated version of the work is published, include both years in the reference.

In-text citation:

  • (King James Bible, 1769/2017)
  • If you are quoting a religious work:

  • Refer to verse number instead of page number:
  • Example: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (King James Bible, 1769/2017, John 1:1).

In the reference list:

Title in italics. (year/year). Publisher.
