Collect or create references

In EndNote Online, you can gather references in several ways. The easiest way is to import your references from the databases, either by direct import or by saving your references as files. You can also search from inside of EndNote Online (Online Search). Sometimes you need to create references manually (New Reference), for example, websites.

Direct import from Primo

  • Log in to EndNote Online.
  • Search Primo.
  • Click the EndNote button in the Primo post:

undefined

Direct import from EBSCO Host databases (Cinahl, Medline etc.)

  • Log in to EndNote Online.
  • Perform a search in the database.
  • Select references by clicking the blue folder next to the posts in your list of results:

Create a reference manually

Sometimes you have to create a reference manually. The information you have to add is information that is needed to create a full reference according to the style you are using, for example, APA or Vancouver.

  • Click Collect and then the subheading New Reference. You should concentrate on the Bibliographic Fields since they are the important ones. Note! Since the fields are customised to fit many different reference styles, you will leave some of them blank. If you use APA, you can use the library's APA guide to see what information should be included in the reference.

  • First, you have to select the Reference Type from the drop-down menu. The most common types are Journal Article, Magazine Article, Newspaper Article, Book, Book Section (e.g. a contribution/chapter in an edited book), Conference Paper, Report, Thesis, and Web Page:

  • Remember that when entering author names you have to first write the last name followed by a comma, then the first name. You must also enter each name on a new line:

  • When you have entered the necessary information, click Save:

  • The newly created reference is then found in the Unfiled folder.

Formatting Corporate Authors

To have EndNote format a corporate author (for example an organization) correctly in your Word document, put a comma after the name.

Swedish statutes

EndNote does not have a reference type that suits references to Swedish statutes to the letter. However, if you use the Web Page template and follow the following steps your reference will be correct.

  • In the field for Author, write SFS followed by the statute's number. End with a comma. If you forget the comma, only SFS will show in your Word document and the number will be excluded.
  • In the field for title, write the statute's title.
  • In the field for URL, paste the URL.
  • Leave the rest of the fields blank. Publication year or retrieved date shall not be included.
